Bivariate splines for ozone concentration forecasting

چکیده
In this paper, we forecast ground level ozone concentrations over the USA, using past spatially distributed measurements and the functional linear regression model. We employ bivariate splines defined over triangulations of the relevant region of the USA to implement this functional data approach in which random surfaces represent ozone concentrations. We compare the least squares method with penalty to the principal components regression approach. Moderate sample sizes provide good quality forecasts in both cases with little computational effort. We also illustrate the variability of forecasts due to the choice of smoothing penalty. Finally, we compare our predictions with the ones obtained using thin-plate splines. Predictions based on bivariate splines require less computational time than the ones based on thin-plate splines and are more accurate. We also quantify the variability in the predictions arising from the variability in the sample using the jackknife, and report that predictions based on bivariate splines are more robust than the ones based on thin-plate splines.

Bivariate Splines for Hurricane Path Forecasting
Every year, hurricanes cause a lot of damage, especially, when they hit cities along the coast line. A notorious example is Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which hit New Orleans and damaged the city significantly. Human intervention cannot change the path of a hurricane. Hence the best possible way to reduce the damage is to predict the path of the hurricane and avoid direct contact. The formation, m...
متن کاملForecasting Models for Predicting Ozone Levels Near Cincinnati, Ohio
This paper presents the development of two empirical ozone-forecasting models for predicting hourly ozone concentrations near Cincinnati, Ohio. This study examined the hourly ozone data collected between 1995 and 1999 at an ozone monitoring station in the Cincinnati area. Two different models, the KZ model and the NN model, were developed using data from 1995 to 1998. The KZ model was developed...
متن کاملForecasting Ozone Density in Tehran Air Using a Smart Data-Driven Approach
Introduction: As a metropolitan area in Iran, Tehran is exposed to damage from air pollution due to its large population and pollutants from various sources. Accordingly, research on damage induced by air pollution in this city seems necessary. The main purpose of this study was to forecast ozone in the city of Tehran. Considering the hazards of ozone (O3) gas on human health and the environmen...
متن کاملSome smoothness conditions and conformality conditions for bivariate quartic and quintic splines
This paper is concerned with a study of some new formulations of smoothness conditions and conformality conditions for multivariate splines in terms of B-net representation. In the bivariate setting, a group of new parameters of bivariate quartic and quintic polynomials over a planar simplex is introduced, new formulations of smoothness conditions of bivariate quartic C1 splines and quintic C2 ...
متن کاملSeismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task
In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...
